Clean Kitchen and water filter

Fridge Filter Fun

How to quickly and easily change your refrigerator’s water filter.
Published on March 10, 2026

Changing your refrigerator’s water filter is definitely not fun, but it can be quick and simple and it will keep your home’s filtered water clean, clear and great‑tasting. Ignoring this small task can have consequences. As the filter becomes saturated, it gradually becomes less effective until the water flows through without being cleaned. Eventually, you’ll notice ice production slowing down or stopping, the water dispensing stream will weaken, and both water and ice will develop funky tastes or odors. So change the filter, but do it correctly to avoid creating a frustrating mess or, worse, damaging your refrigerator.

Find the Water Filter Location

Begin by locating the filter. In most Frigidaire refrigerators it’s either in the upper‑right interior corner or the base grille. If you can’t see it, check your owner’s manual.

Turn Off the Ice Maker

Before you attempt any water filter replacement, switch off the ice maker. This prevents it from pulling water mid‑change, which reduces the chance of leaks, trapped air, or ice‑maker issues after installation.

Remove the Old Filter Correctly

Depending on your refrigerator design, the filter will either push to release or twist to unlock. If it feels stuck, gently reseat it and try again—age, mineral deposits or pressure changes can create temporary resistance. Avoid forcing it, which can damage the mount.

Prepare and Install the New Filter

Remove any caps on the new filter, then align it with the housing and lock it into place with a twist or click. If it doesn’t seat easily, confirm that the replacement is the correct one—Frigidaire water filters are model‑specific. You can order genuine Frigidaire filters here. (Stress on the word “genuine” because you never want to use a counterfeit. Find out how to spot a counterfeit here.)

Flush the System Thoroughly

Run water from the dispenser for about 3 minutes (or 1.5 gallons) to clear out trapped air and carbon dust and to restore a steady flow. Skipping this step can lead to murky water or sputtering. (Instead of dumping the flush water down the drain, consider using it to water your plants. It’s good for the environment.)

Reset and Remember

Reset the filter indicator light by holding the reset button for 3–5 seconds until the indicator clears. Most households benefit from replacing the filter every six months—more often if your home has hard water or if you use the filtered water for cooking, tea and coffee, etc. Signing up for Subscribe & Save here is a great way to remember your next filter change—they’re delivered right to your door on the schedule you choose—and save money at the same time.
