A Chill Guide to Window ACs

Smart, simple steps to finding and correctly placing your window air conditioner
Published on May 26, 2026
Choosing the right window for a new air conditioner and preparing it properly can improve cooling, reduce noise, and boost energy efficiency.

Check that window AC units are allowed where you live. Some apartments or HOAs restrict them. If so, consider a portable AC instead.

Measure your room’s length and width to calculate square footage, then choose a BTU rating that fits. Open layouts may require more power.

Match the Unit to the Window

Classic window air conditioners are designed for standard single‑hung or double‑hung windows. The window frame should be sturdy and free from damage, like rot or warping, and clear of obstacles such as fire escapes, outdoor lighting or exterior fixtures. If the frame feels weak, reinforcing or replacing it may be necessary.

A strong window frame improves safety, reduces vibration, and supports better cooling performance.

Measure Twice, Cool Once

Accurate measurements help minimize air leaks—both hot air in and cool air out. Measure inside the smallest point of the window frame—width, height and sill depth. Do not include the window trim in the measurement. Then use those dimensions to find a similar-sized unit. Note that adjustable side panels offer some sizing flexibility, but only within a set range.

Measure width, height and sill depth

Check for outlets near your preferred window and be sure they’re on circuits that can handle additional load. While window ACs don’t require dedicated wiring, plugging into an already loaded circuit is a recipe for disaster. (And never plug an AC unit into an extension cord or surge protector, for exactly the same reasons.) If the only nearby outlet is already on a crowded circuit, you may need an electrician’s help.

Account for adjustable panels

Panels help fill gaps, but only within a limited range, choose a close match.

Precise sizing keeps cool air in and hot air out, improving efficiency.

Think About Power

Use a nearby outlet that can handle the load. Avoid overloaded circuits, extension cords, and surge protectors.

If needed, consult an electrician to ensure safe and reliable operation.

Proper installation improves performance, efficiency, and comfort.
