Choosing a Room Air Conditioner

Room Air Conditioners versus Central Units

Room air conditioners offer several advantages over large-capacity central units, not the least of which is initial cost. In the right situation, operating costs can be much lower since you cool only the rooms in use rather than the cooling the entire house. By tailoring each room's climate to individual preferences, the result is personalized temperature and humidity comfort control, and usually a cost savings as well.

Calculating Cooling Capacity

The prime point in your purchasing decision is determining the proper cooling capacity - measured in BTU's (British Thermal Units.) Models are available with cooling capacities from 5,000 to around 28,000 BTU's. It's important that the unit you choose be specially selected for the room it will serve. Undersized units won't cool well and will overwork. Oversized units will operate inefficiently, cost more to buy and run, and are apt to dehumidify improperly. Your dealer will help you calculate the precise capacity you need. Be prepared to supply him with some specific information: a simple floor plan drawn to show all room dimensions, doors, windows, and which way is North; the number of people it will serve; sources of heat such as lamps, TV, and appliances: an explanation of what's above the intended room; and your insulation provisions.

BTU Cooling Capacity Needed by Room Size

Measure the length and width of the area to be cooled. Multiply the length by the width to determine Sq. Ft. or Sq. m. Locate the Sq. Ft. or Sq. m in the columns below. Choose a BTU size from the chart for the area to be cooled.

Room Size

BTUs

Sq. Ft. Sq. m
150 14 up to 5,000
165 15 5,200
215 20 6,000
350 33 8,000
425 39 9,000
500 46 10,000
640 60 14,000
900 84 15,100
1,110 103 18,000
1,170 109 18,500
1,435 133 22,000
1,672 154 25,000
1,960 182 28,500

NOTE:  When cooling rooms with uninsulated ceilings, great rooms, or southern or western sun exposures step up to the next BTU size or consult your sales professional.
